xAI, supported by Elon Musk, has introduced Grok 4 Fast, a new language model offering free access via OpenRouter and Vercel for a limited time. This compact version delivers results akin to its predecessor, Grok 4, but with significantly reduced computational power and cost.
Grok 4 Fast comes in two variants: one for complex reasoning tasks and another for simple answers, each with a 2-million-token context window. In tests like GPQA Diamond and AIME 2025, it performs closely to GPT-5 or Grok 4, despite using 40% fewer 'thinking tokens'.
The model combines simple answers and complex processes in one architecture, aligning with the trend towards hybrid models. It uses about 40% less computational effort than Grok 4, reducing costs per task by up to 98%. In tests like BrowseComp and X Bench Deepsearch, Grok 4 Fast outperforms its predecessor and currently ranks 8th in the Text Arena.
Grok 4 Fast is now available via grok.com, iOS and Android apps, and the xAI API. With its improved efficiency and free access for a limited time, it presents an attractive option for users seeking powerful language model capabilities without the high computational cost.
