Electric minibuses tested by MVG in Munich - complimentary rides

In the vibrant city of Munich, the Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) is making strides in modernising its public transportation system. One of the latest developments is the testing of new electric buses and autonomous minibuses.

The MVG is currently trialling electric buses, designed to serve remote areas and narrow districts more effectively. These buses, smaller in size, can accommodate up to 10 passengers and are barrier-free, allowing for the transport of prams and wheelchairs with ease. Starting from October 24, these new electric buses with a driver will be tested on line 167 in Hadern.

The MVG is also considering the use of driverless minibuses for better service on the outskirts of Munich. If approved and produced in series as early as 2027/2028, these driverless minibuses could potentially operate without a driver from 2026. The test results could influence the deployment of driverless shuttles in Munich, aiming to improve early or late shifts and areas on the city's outskirts.

Notably, the first autonomous minibuses without drivers that could go into series production by 2027/2028 are expected based on recent manufacturer statements. Renault, in cooperation with the Chinese startup WeRide, is actively developing and testing autonomous shuttle buses at level 4, with ongoing projects in several cities, aiming at public transport applications around 2025 and beyond.

In the meantime, MVG passengers can benefit from the MVG app, which allows live tracking of buses and trams in Munich, ensuring a smoother and more efficient journey for all. During the test period of the new buses, the ride on these buses is free, offering an opportunity for the public to experience the future of public transportation first-hand.

Potential deployment areas for the new buses include Neuaubing and Freiham. In the MVG test, three connected vehicles will run between Waldfriedhof and Großhaderner Straße. The test of the new buses will provide insights for driverless shuttles, paving the way for a larger and more flexible offer at a similar price in Munich's public transportation system.
