Thunderbolt Share: A Revolutionary PC-to-PC Connection Solution

Thunderbolt Share, a groundbreaking technology introduced by Intel, is revolutionizing the way Windows PCs communicate directly with each other. This innovative solution allows for fast, direct file and resource sharing between two Windows PCs connected via Thunderbolt ports, bypassing traditional network connections.

To leverage Thunderbolt Share for PC-to-PC communication, you'll need two Windows PCs equipped with Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 ports. You'll also require a Thunderbolt Share-licensed accessory or device, such as the Plugable TBT-UDT3 or the Razer Thunderbolt 5 Dock, a Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 cable to connect the PCs or the PC and the accessory, and the Thunderbolt Share software (TSSetup.exe) from Intel to configure and enable sharing features on the systems.

Thunderbolt Share operates over the Thunderbolt interface's high bandwidth capabilities—up to 120 Gb/s with Thunderbolt 5—enabling rapid data transfers, multi-monitor support, and device sharing with minimal latency. With Thunderbolt Share, you can enjoy drag-and-drop file transfer, folder syncing, data transfer to a new PC, and PC control with another's keyboard and mouse.

Currently, Thunderbolt Share is not supported on macOS and is specific to Windows systems. However, certified devices like the Plugable TBT-UDT3 dock, Razer’s Thunderbolt 5 dock, and Razer Core X V2 external GPU enclosure are available for Windows users.

As for the cost, using docks and monitors for Thunderbolt Share comes at a premium, with prices over $200 and $300, respectively.

In the future, more Intel-powered Windows PCs are expected to support Thunderbolt Share, with a significant push into handheld gaming PCs planned to take on AMD. However, Thunderbolt Share certification is rare on new PCs, disqualifying all Thunderbolt-equipped Macs and Chromebooks, and requiring Windows 11.

Thunderbolt Share seems like an ideal PC-linking option, but far too few devices currently offer the feature to users. Nevertheless, this innovative technology represents a promising step towards a more seamless and efficient future for PC connectivity.

On a separate note, Best Buy is currently hosting a big sitewide Presidents' Day sale.
