Düsseldorf's New Memorial: 'Missing Link_' Now Permanent
A significant addition to Düsseldorf's memorial landscape has been completed. The artwork 'missing link_' now stands permanently at the site of the former synagogue on Kasernenstraße, destroyed during the 1938 pogrom.
The installation of the 1.7-ton artwork was a complex task, requiring a crane and large suction cups. It was created by light and concept artist Mischa Kuball, who teaches at the Cologne University of Media Arts. The artwork was initially displayed last year as a temporary memorial, but its significance has led to a permanent installation.
The 'missing link_' memorial aims to raise awareness of the pogrom, during which SA and SS gangs, along with Nazi-sympathizing citizens, destroyed Jewish businesses, tortured and killed people, and set fire to the synagogue. The synagogue, inaugurated in 1904, stood until its destruction in 1938. The Düsseldorf fire department was ordered to remain inactive, and the Jewish community was later forced to pay for the demolition of the ruins.
The permanent installation of 'missing link_' is a joint project of the Jewish community, the city, and the memorial and commemorative site. It will be officially opened on November 9. The artwork serves as a reminder of the past, ensuring that the history of the pogrom and the destroyed synagogue is not forgotten.
