During my appreciation for my Porsche Taycan, a major malfunction occurred, happening just a year after purchase.
The 2024 Porsche Taycan 4S, a high-performance electric vehicle (EV), is experiencing an ongoing issue with an "Engine control error." This problem, which causes the powertrain to shut down and can result in a sudden loss of motive power, is primarily due to faulty software sending false signals [1].
Despite multiple recalls and technical service bulletins related to electrical and engine systems for Taycan models, Porsche has not yet issued a dedicated new recall specifically addressing the "Engine control error" issue on the 2024 Taycan 4S. However, the company has planned advanced diagnostic software updates, expected to be available starting in early 2025, aimed at improving reliability and addressing some of the vehicle's electrical system faults [2].
Mark Tan, a Taycan owner, has reported that both his 2020 Taycan Turbos experienced the same issue, resulting in shutdown and coasting to a stop. The repairs for his Taycan Turbos involved replacing the front motor control unit and repairing/replacing the coolant fans located in the front bumper. These repairs cost approximately $24,000 and $8,000, respectively [1].
Not all Taycan owners share the same sentiments, with some praising the vehicle's driving characteristics and tech. However, concerns about the model's reliability persist, with Norman K Chu and Jeff Voge, another Taycan owner, expressing their worries. These concerns are not limited to individual owners, as extensive discussions about the Porsche EV's issues can be found on forums such as the Taycan forum and Reddit [3].
Some dealers are taking matters into their own hands to address the Taycan's issues, while others, like Jeff Voge, are left grappling with the "Engine control error." The issue has also led to speculation that Porsche may discontinue the Taycan in favour of a new Panamera [4].
Meanwhile, the 718 EV is still in the works, but it has already received a negative reception. The Porsche 911, however, continues to carry the brand's heritage, despite Porsche's electrification strategy seemingly backtracking [5].
Owners experiencing this issue are advised to remain in contact with Porsche dealers for the latest software updates and warranty service options.
