Dresden-based company unveils a supercomputer designed to replicate human cognition
SpiNNcloud Systems, a spin-off from TU Dresden, has announced the commercial availability of SpiNNaker2, the most flexible neural supercomputer architecture available today. This groundbreaking platform was developed in collaboration with TU Dresden, the University of Manchester, and other international partners.
SpiNNaker2, modelled after the human brain, requires only 30 watts to perform the most complex tasks, making it the world's largest and most energy-efficient supercomputer for real-time artificial intelligence. The European Innovation Council (EIC) has provided funding for the development of the cloud service for SpiNNaker2, with a total of 2.5 million euros allocated for the SpiNNaker2 project.
Initially, SpiNNaker2 will be available as a cloud platform solution. The cloud service is expected to be available in the second half of 2024, with full production systems becoming available in the first half of 2025. This development has established Dresden as an internationally significant location for high-tech research and development.
The cloud service for SpiNNaker2 could potentially be used by renowned institutions such as Sandia National Laboratories, as they have shown interest in SpiNNaker2. Fred Rothganger from Sandia National Laboratories is thrilled to develop applications on SpiNNaker2.
SpiNNaker1, the first generation of the project's neuromorphic computer, is already being used in research groups in 23 countries worldwide. The successor, SpiNNaker2, was developed as part of the European Human Brain Project, a multi-billion euro research project of the European Union. If accepted, SpiNNaker2 may be part of this project, further expanding its reach and impact.
The cloud service aims to provide early customers with affordable access to this revolutionary technology. As we move towards a more AI-driven future, SpiNNaker2 promises to play a significant role in advancing our understanding and capabilities in this field.
