Disney Plus turns to mid-length variety show programming as a new investment strategy
Disney+ is set to debut five mid-form variety shows as part of a project called "Weekly Entertainment Hall." This project aims to offer daily entertainment from Friday to Tuesday, with episodes of 25–30 minutes length each.
The shows aim to bridge the gap between traditional long-form variety shows and short-form content by delivering a mid-form format that is longer than short clips but more accessible and quicker to consume than typical variety episodes.
Here's a rundown of the five shows and their concepts:
- YOO Got a Minute? (Mondays, from Aug 25)
- The first 10 weeks will feature "You Bought What?!" where Yoo Byungjae explores celebrities' unusual spending habits.
- Weeks 11–20 will see "The Quiet Interview," where interviewees must not laugh or the interview ends.
- Chef’s Go-To (Tuesdays, from Aug 26)
- This showcase of Korea’s famous chefs exploring hidden back-alley eateries and local delicacies offers viewers unique culinary experiences.
- Hoorah Hoorah Anchovy Camp (Fridays, from Aug 22)
- A physical variety show where less physically active celebrities face fitness challenges, directed by notable Korean variety PDs Moon Sang-don and Won Seung-jae.
- 60 Minutes to Love (Saturdays, from Aug 23)
- This show follows Running Man star Ji Yeeun on 60-minute speed dates with diverse men, aiming to find true love over the course of 20 episodes.
- Belly Showdown (Sundays, from Aug 24)
- This show features six personalities competing in comedic, high-calorie food challenges using their appetites to win. The participants include Seo Jang-hoon, Shin Ki-ru, Shindong, Lee Kyu-ho, Pungja and Na Sun-wook.
These shows are released daily at 8 a.m. Korean time to fit modern content consumption patterns and provide flexible viewing aligned with daily life routines. The strategic intent is to deliver "short and intense laughter and fun" tailored toward the tastes of MZ generation viewers and digital natives, blending immersive entertainment with a duration that respects today's generally shorter attention spans.
This initiative marks Disney+'s first mid-form weekly variety series, aiming to diversify its content portfolio in Korea and beyond, with availability across multiple Asian countries including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and others.
These five mid-form shows on Disney+ from August 22 offer themed, daily fresh Korean variety content that targets a viewing length and format bridging traditional long-form and short-form content, reflecting changing generational preferences and viewing habits.
In addition, this move by Disney+ follows a format popularized by Netflix with these shows. The early morning release schedule allows viewers to engage with the content at their convenience throughout the day, as stated by a Disney+ official. The shows are scheduled to run through the end of the year on Disney+.
