Discord Security Breach: Third-Party Provider Exposes User Data
Discord, the renowned communication platform, has disclosed a security incident involving a third-party customer support provider. The unauthorized access, detected on May 24, exposed sensitive user data. The breach did not directly compromise Discord's systems. Instead, an external party targeted the third-party service's access to Discord's ticketing system, emphasizing the escalating security risks posed by third-party services, even for prominent platforms with robust internal safeguards. Exposed information includes names, Discord usernames, emails, contact details, IP addresses, limited billing information, and support messages. A small number of government-issued ID images may also have been accessed. Discord has not publicly identified the compromised third-party provider. Discord has initiated an investigation with a computer forensics firm and law enforcement. They have also informed relevant data protection authorities and are proactively engaging with law enforcement to investigate the attack. Affected users are being notified via email, and Discord is warning against potential phishing threats via phone calls. The breach was for extortion purposes, and no messages or activities beyond support interactions were accessed.
