Developer Interview Series Vol. 17: GameChat Discussion - Segment 1
In March 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 was launched with an exciting new feature - GameChat, a voice and video chat system that promises to revolutionize multiplayer gaming. The idea for GameChat originated from the frustrations experienced by Nintendo developers during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they had to use makeshift solutions for remote communication.
The developers behind GameChat started working on the project around 2020, and the prototype was completed in just six months. The hardware development team began thinking about camera specifications for GameChat around the same time. The C Button was added to the controller at the very last minute, just before the controller molds were about to be made.
GameChat is designed to minimize system resource usage, ensuring that it does not affect game performance. Some of its streaming technology builds on what was developed for the Wii U and Wii U GamePad. The theme for GameChat is a "student lounge," and the camera is seen as playing a key role in creating the desired atmosphere.
The GameChat feature supports voice and video chat for up to 12 players simultaneously, though video sharing is limited to four players at once. This feature represents a significant modernization of Nintendo’s online multiplayer by integrating communication directly into gameplay.
GameChat also underpins features like GameShare, allowing multiplayer sessions via GameChat on Switch 2 titles, enhancing social and cooperative play experiences.
Internet, Nintendo Switch Online membership, and a Nintendo Account are required for online features, including GameChat. A compatible USB camera is required for video features. GameChat Open-Access Period is until March 31, 2026, after which a Nintendo Switch Online membership will be required.
Baba Is You, a puzzle game published by Hempuli, was released in March 2019 in North America for Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and Nintendo 64 were home video game consoles released in October 1985, August 1991, and September 1996, respectively, in North America. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a single-player game released for Nintendo Switch and Wii U in March 2017.
GameChat is not available in all countries. It is an innovative feature that aims to create a space where people would naturally gather, whether it's to play games, watch, or just hang out. Pressing the C Button to start a chat, operate the camera, or adjust the settings is considered intuitive and will create a completely new experience for players.
