Data Centers to Surge to 12% of US Energy Demand by 2028
Data centers, once a minor consumer of electricity, are now set to become a major player in USA energy demand. A decade ago, they accounted for just 1% of grid demand. Now, the US Department of Energy predicts they could reach up to 12% in the next three years.
In 2015, data centers made up around 1% of grid demand, raising concerns due to their significant energy consumption. Fast forward to 2025, and the situation has changed dramatically. The US Department of Energy forecasts that data centers could soon account for up to 12% of the nation's electricity demand.
As of March 2025, the United States boasts over 5,400 data centers. This number is more than ten times higher than that of Germany, the country with the second-highest number of data centers.
The rapid growth in data centers, from consuming 1% of grid demand a decade ago to potentially 12% in the near future, underscores the need for efficient energy management and renewable energy integration in these facilities.
