Cyber Threats Skyrocket in 2024 as AI-Powered Attacks Speed Up
Cyber threats have escalated in 2024, with threat actors exploiting AI and new tactics to speed up attacks. The mean time to contain (MTTC) attacks has risen to 8 hours 12 minutes, while breakout times have plummeted.
Threat actors have cut their breakout time by 22% compared to the previous year, reaching as little as 27 minutes. They've embraced AI for reconnaissance, exploit generation, and real-time adaptation, reducing the time between software flaw discovery and exploitation by 62%.
Specialised 'ransomware assembly lines' and the combination of infostealers and initial access brokers (IABs) have contributed to this acceleration. Infostealer logs increased by 50%, and IAB listings surged by 142%. IT helpdesk 'vishing' has also played a role, with a mean time of just eight minutes between initial email wave and command-and-control (C2) establishment.
The rapid evolution of cyber threats in 2024 has challenged network defenders to accelerate incident response. With threat actors leveraging AI and new tactics to speed up attacks, organizations must enhance their security measures and incident response strategies to keep pace.
