Copia's Tech-Driven Food Donation Platform Reduces Waste and Hunger
Copia, a tech-driven platform for food donation, is reducing waste and hunger. Available in 43 states, Canada, and Puerto Rico, Copia streamlines surplus food distribution from restaurants to nonprofits, benefiting both the environment and those in need.
Copia matches restaurants with excess food to local nonprofits, making the donation process convenient and efficient. Besides José Andrés Group (JAG), chains like Sweetgreen, Cava, The Cheesecake Factory, and True Food Kitchen, along with hotel brands, use Copia to reduce waste.
The IRS allows businesses to factor in labor, utility, and packaging costs into the value of the donation, incentivizing participation. JAG has already redirected about 4,000 pounds of food, preventing approximately 12,591 pounds of carbon emissions and saving around 932,000 gallons of water. This aligns with Copia's mission to tackle food waste, which contributes to climate change, with nearly 40% of U.S. food production going uneaten.
With an estimated 47.4 million Americans living in food-insecure households, including nearly 14 million children, Copia's work is crucial. Restaurants can schedule pickups at their convenience and receive automatic receipts for tax purposes, further simplifying the process.
Copia's innovative platform is a win-win, reducing food waste and hunger while benefiting restaurants through tax incentives. As more restaurants adopt this technology, the positive impact on both the environment and society is significant.
