BYD Dominates Plug-in Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Markets in 2025
In a significant shift in the global automotive industry, Chinese manufacturer BYD has taken the lead in the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and electric vehicle (EV) markets in 2025.
The global PHEV market saw a growth of 30% year on year across the first seven months of 2025, with a total of 410,4971 newly sold cars equipped with the plug-in hybrid powertrain. Among the top sellers, BYD accounted for seven of the top 10 best-selling PHEVs, with the BYD Song Plus taking first place, and the BYD Qin L and BYD Song Plus coming in 10th and 9th respectively. The Li Auto L6, the first non-BYD model to make the top 10, claimed 2.7% of the market share.
The Li Auto L6, however, experienced a 40% decline in PHEV deliveries in July 2025, with 14,905 units sold. On the other hand, the BYD Seal 6 saw a 13.9% increase in PHEV deliveries during the same period, with 25,307 units sold.
In the BEV market, BYD also made a strong showing. The BYD Seagull finished fourth in global BEV sales in July 2025, with 229,893 sales and a 3.2% market share. The BYD Yuan Plus was seventh, with 145,382 deliveries and a 2% market share, and the BYD Dolphin was fourth in the top 10, with 116,665 sales and a 1.6% market share. The Geely Geome Xingyuan was the second best-selling BEV globally in July 2025, with 44,286 deliveries and a 4.1% market share, closely followed by the Wuling Mini in fifth place, with 197,477 new models sold and a 2.8% market share.
BEVs outpaced PHEVs in both volume and growth, up by 34.6% to 7,152,170 units, and making up 65.3% of all EV sales between January and July 2025. The global all-electric car market had 1,090,120 BEV sales in July 2025.
In the overall EV market, the Tesla Model Y still held the lead across the first seven months of 2025, with 551,104 sales and a 7.7% market share. The Tesla Model 3, which saw a 7.1% year-on-year drop in deliveries, was third in July 2025 with 31,598 units and a 3.1% market share. The Model 3, however, remained competitive, with 259,584 deliveries and a 3.6% share, placing it in second place, closely followed by the Geely Geome Xingyuan in third place with a 3.5% share and 249,377 deliveries.
The BYD Yuan Up came next in global BEV sales in July 2025, with 121,136 sales and a 1.7% market share. The Xiaomi SU7 finished sixth, with 180,255 sales and a 2.5% market share, and the Wuling Bingo was 10th, with 107,097 deliveries and a 1.5% market share.
Chinese BEVs occupied the remainder of the top 10 in July 2025, signifying a significant shift in the global EV market towards Chinese manufacturers. The strong performance of BYD and other Chinese brands highlights the rapid growth and innovation in the Chinese EV industry.
