Construction site tours the cutting-edge of development with Lux in tow
In the heart of Hürth, a significant milestone has been reached in the urban development project, Lebensader Lux. The former AOK building, a symbol of the city's past, has been demolished, marking a new beginning for the future.
The demolition process was led by Concular GmbH, with Rhiem & Sohn Kies und Sand GmbH & Co. KG also participating in the material handling. During the demolition, potentially hazardous materials were identified and professionally disposed of, ensuring the safety of the environment and the community.
The city administration, in line with its commitment to sustainability, conducted an inventory of potentially reusable building products, components, and materials from large-scale demolition projects, including the AOK building. This initiative, originating from a motion by the planning committee in December 2023, has led to a cooperation with RWTH Aachen and Construction Robotics.
The reused materials, including metal elements, handrails, floor grilles, bricks, windows, and benches, will find a new life in the European Target-X project. This interdisciplinary research project, located on a 4,000 square meter reference construction site in Aachen, brings together an research team from RWTH Aachen and Construction Robotics, working on the construction site of the future.
Since an economic utilization was not possible in the current case, the materials will be used in the European Target-X project for innovative research and teaching approaches. The components from Hürth will serve as a practical basis for the team, contributing to the project's goal of shaping the construction site of the future.
The reuse of materials from the demolished building is a significant step towards a more sustainable urban development. The demolished site will be transformed into a modern building and a new square with a water feature, green spaces, and high-quality stay, reflecting Hürth's commitment to creating a livable and sustainable city.
