Confirmed first AMD Strix Halo handheld gaming PC - GPD reveals Ryzen AI Max+ 395 handheld in performance demo video

The gaming world is abuzz with excitement about the upcoming GPD WIN 5, a handheld PC powered by AMD's Ryzen AI Max+ 395 chip. This compact device promises to deliver laptop-level gaming performance, setting new standards for portable gaming.

At its heart, the GPD WIN 5 boasts a powerful AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 APU. This chip is equipped with 16 Zen 5 CPU cores and 32 threads, along with a Radeon 8060S GPU featuring 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units. This configuration is said to offer desktop-class performance comparable to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU, making it an ideal choice for demanding AAA games.

Key Specifications and Features

The GPD WIN 5's display is a 7-inch, 1080p panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support. It uses Lenovo's PureSight technology, delivering 500 nits of brightness and a 100% sRGB colour gamut for vivid visuals.

For memory, users can choose from 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB of quad-channel LPDDR5x-8000 RAM, offering exceptional bandwidth for gaming and multitasking. Storage-wise, the device supports up to 4TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD in an M.2 2280 slot, ensuring ultra-fast game loading and storage capacity.

Cooling is handled by a sophisticated system with dual fans and four heat pipes, maintaining temperatures around 65°C at a power draw of 55-70W. Despite this, the device lacks an internal battery to maximise cooling space. Instead, it uses an 80Wh external battery pack.

The GPD WIN 5 comes with 3 months of PC Game Pass and EA Play, broadening game access from launch. The expected price for the version with the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and 32GB RAM is suggested to be over $1,500 USD, positioning it as a premium handheld device.

A Promising Future

The GPD WIN 5 is expected to debut at ChinaJoy 2025, starting on August 1. Pricing details might be revealed at this event. Given the high cost of producing 4nm silicon at TSMC and the laws of supply and demand, the device may carry a high price tag.

The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 chip and its counterparts have previously been associated with high prices. However, if the GPD WIN 5 can deliver on its promises, it could potentially be one of the best gaming handhelds on the market.
