Collaboration Announcement: Uber, Lucid, and Nuro Join Forces for Autonomous Taxis Development
In a groundbreaking development, Uber Technologies, Lucid Group, and Nuro Inc. have joined forces to create a next-generation autonomous robotaxi program. This partnership aims to bring autonomous driving to millions, with a focus on safety, advanced vehicle design, and AI-powered autonomy on the Uber platform.
The collaboration was announced in July 2025, and the robotaxi service is slated for launch in a major U.S. city in 2027. Over the next six years, up to 20,000 vehicles will be rolled out across dozens of global markets.
Uber has committed significant investments to support the project. The company will invest around $300 million in Lucid and an undisclosed "multi-hundred-million-dollar" amount in Nuro to fund vehicle production and technology integration.
The vehicles, Lucid's Gravity SUVs, will be equipped with Nuro's self-driving technology. The AI-driven autonomy system integrates LiDAR, radar, and cameras processed with Nvidia chips. Notably, Nuro's technology has clocked 1.4 million autonomous miles with zero at-fault incidents and has an NHTSA-approved exemption, demonstrating its safety and scalability.
The vehicles will be owned and operated by Uber or third-party fleet partners. They will run on Nuro's Driver Level 4 autonomy system, and the first Lucid robotaxi with the software is already operating autonomously on Nuro's closed circuit proving grounds in Nevada.
Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, expressed his excitement about the potential of autonomous vehicles to transform cities for the better. Meanwhile, Lucid's Interim CEO, Marc Winterhoff, stated that the investment validates Lucid's vehicle architecture as ideal for autonomous driving. He also highlighted the spacious, well-appointed interiors of the Gravity SUVs as suitable for ridesharing.
The partnership comes at a time when robotaxis are gaining attention, with Waymo leading in autonomous ridesharing and Tesla recently launching driverless car testing. The partnership between these three companies is expected to extend Lucid's innovation and technology leadership into the multi-trillion-dollar autonomous driving market.
This development marks a significant step forward in the integration of autonomous vehicles into our daily lives, promising a safer, more efficient, and more accessible transportation future.
