China Pioneers World's First Underwater Data Center in Hainan
Hainan province, China, is pioneering a novel approach to data center technology. As part of its 14th Five-Year Plan, it is constructing the world's first commercial underwater data center, which has recently gone live off its coast. This innovative facility promises enhanced energy efficiency and significant processing power.
The data center comprises 100 underwater capsules, each housing 24 server racks that can accommodate 400 to 500 servers. This setup equates to a total computing power equivalent to 30,000 high-end personal computers. Notably, the data center employs seawater cooling, making it 40 to 60 percent more energy efficient than traditional data centers.
The facility can process up to 7,000 AI queries per second, demonstrating its impressive computational capabilities. Ten companies have already signed agreements to utilize this cutting-edge infrastructure, although their identities remain undisclosed at present.
Hainan's underwater data center marks a significant milestone in data center technology. Its energy efficiency and processing power are expected to attract more businesses, with ten companies already committed. As China continues to innovate in this sector, the potential for underwater data centers to reshape global tech infrastructure is substantial.
