China Patents Foldable Anti-Drone Tank Shield, 'Dragon Shield'
A Chinese foldable anti-drone protection system for tanks, akin to Ukraine's 'hood' system, has been patented. The patent holder remains uncertain, but speculation points to major Chinese state-owned defence corporations. Dubbed 'Dragon Shield', this system uses motors for automatic opening and closing, unlike Ukraine's manual version.
The 'Dragon Shield' system aligns with a trend of Chinese military vehicles being equipped with active protection systems (APS) against drone threats. These systems can include jammers, lasers, or electronic countermeasures, often modular and foldable to protect the tank during movement without increasing its profile.
Ukraine's original 'hood' system is simpler, consisting of a collapsible frame opened or closed manually. Russia acknowledged its effectiveness and adapted it for its T-72 and T-80 tanks. China has since registered a patent for a similar system, but with the addition of motors for automatic operation. However, this introduces potential vulnerabilities and emergency exit concerns.
The patent for the 'Dragon Shield' system indicates China's close monitoring of battlefield trends and its willingness to adapt and improve upon existing technologies. Despite the patent, the exact holder remains unclear, with speculation pointing towards major Chinese state-owned defence corporations. Further investigation would be needed to confirm the patent holder and assess the system's practical implications.
