BYD vows to establish a rapid-charging infrastructure across Europe
Chinese automotive giant BYD is set to revolutionise electric vehicle (EV) charging in Europe with its ambitious expansion plan, which includes the deployment of fast-charging networks and the establishment of local production facilities.
The cornerstone of BYD's European strategy is the introduction of its groundbreaking 1,000 kW Flash Chargers, scheduled to be rolled out in the UK by the end of 2025. These chargers, which can provide charging speeds comparable to refuelling a gasoline-powered car, will be open to all vehicle owners, offering a 20-30% faster charging rate than conventional chargers.
Stella Li, BYD's Executive Vice President, announced this plan during a press event in Brussels, Belgium, emphasising the company's long-term commitment to the European market. "We are going to build in Europe to sell in Europe," she said, underlining the company's intention to become a major automotive player in the continent by 2030.
To support this ambitious goal, BYD is investing in a production facility, research and development center, and European headquarters in Budapest, Hungary. These facilities, due to open this year, will enable local manufacturing of vehicles tailored for the European market.
The UK has been chosen as the initial adopter country for the 1,000 kW megawatt chargers, with the first installations expected by the end of 2025 or early 2026. BYD is currently in talks with partners in the UK to facilitate installation of the new charging infrastructure.
The fast chargers used by BYD operate on a 1,000-volt architecture, a significant upgrade from the current European standard of 500 kW. This infrastructure push will benefit future EVs capable of megawatt-level charging, including BYD's Denza brand, which is expected to introduce advanced battery technology to the UK market.
BYD's expansion plan is not limited to the UK. The company is looking to expand its fast-charging network across Europe, with the specific cities yet to be announced. The new charging network is expected to boost consumer confidence in electric driving, according to Li.
The company's sales in Europe are already on the rise, with Li claiming that sales are increasing by 10% every month this year. BYD currently has dealerships in several European nations, providing a solid foundation for its expansion.
This comprehensive approach to market penetration combines vehicle sales, local manufacturing, innovation in charging technology, and charging network expansion, positioning BYD as a significant player in the European EV market.
The financial investments made by BYD, such as building a production facility and a research and development center in Hungary, underscores its commitment to the European market and the industry. In the realm of technology, BYD is introducing its groundbreaking 1,000 kW Flash Chargers, a significant upgrade from the current European standard, which will undoubtedly enhance the energy efficiency of electric vehicles.
