BYD reaches significant 13-million mark in production of New Energy Vehicles
In a significant milestone for the electric vehicle (EV) industry, Chinese automaker BYD has announced that its Atto 3 model has surpassed one million sales worldwide. The electric SUV, known as the Yuan Plus in China, achieved this remarkable feat in just 31 months, averaging about 719 vehicles sold each day.
First launched in February 2022, the Atto 3 has contributed significantly to BYD's strong performance and industrial advancements in the EV market. Exports of the Atto 3 expanded to over 100 countries, underscoring its global appeal.
In China, the Atto 3 sold around 300,000 units in the first 14 months, followed by an additional 200,000 units in the next six months. This rapid growth is a testament to the consumer confidence in BYD's technology and vision, both in its home market and abroad.
BYD's dominance and exponential growth in the global new energy vehicle (NEV) market are driven by several key factors. The company reached a milestone of 13 million NEVs produced by mid-2025, reflecting sustained and rapid production capacity expansion.
In the first half of 2025 alone, BYD sold over 2.11 million units in China (up 31.5% year-on-year) and 472,000 units internationally (up 128.5% year-on-year), underscoring its large-scale market presence both domestically and globally.
BYD holds over 31% share of the China NEV market, far ahead of competitors like Tesla. The company strategically engaged in price cuts in 2024 to defend and grow market share, exemplified by lowering prices on popular models like the Qin PLUS Glory Edition. This aggressive pricing helped capture around 50% market share in the mainstream 100,000–200,000 RMB segment and 25% in the sub-100,000 RMB bracket.
BYD's vertical integration of key components and production processes supports cost competitiveness, product availability, and reliability. The company has expanded not only in China but also saw rapid international growth, leading regional markets like Thailand.
In a bid to redefine high-end mobility, BYD recently unveiled the Yangwang U7, a flagship model under its premium sub-brand. The Yangwang U7 is designed to showcase cutting-edge technology and luxury features, reflecting BYD's ambition to build brand equity and proprietary technology for long-term competitiveness.
As global demand for electric and hybrid vehicles continues to climb, BYD's strong performance and industrial advancements highlight its role as a key player shaping the future of sustainable transportation. The company's sustained demand, stable inventory, and solid market fundamentals collectively underpin its current global leadership and rapid growth in the NEV market.
The Atto 3, with its range of 60.48 kWh and ability to travel up to 521 km, is priced at ₹ 24.99 Lakhs in India. The Tata Harrier EV, another significant player in the Indian market, boasts a range of 75 kWh and can travel up to 627 km, priced at ₹ 21.49 Lakhs. The Mahindra XEV 9e, another competitor, offers a range of 79 kWh and can travel up to 656 km, priced at ₹ 21.90 Lakhs.
As the race for electric vehicle dominance continues, it's clear that BYD is setting the pace, demonstrating that sustainable transportation can be both affordable and luxurious.
Technology plays a crucial role in BYD's ambition to redefine high-end mobility, as shown by the cutting-edge features of their flagship model, the Yangwang U7.
As interest in sports like football grows in China, BYD's dominance in the electric vehicle market mirrors the country's increasing influence on a global scale, just like its football teams participating in prestigious sports leagues around the world.
