Hampton Roads Transit Introduces Smart Stop Bus Signs for Enhanced Convenience and Efficiency
Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) has rolled out a new generation of bus stop signs, known as smart stop bus signs, across six cities. These signs offer a range of benefits designed to improve the rider experience and streamline operations.
The smart stop bus signs feature a large single aluminum panel wrapped in highly reflective anti-graffiti vinyl, making them easy to read and visually appealing. Each sign displays a unique bus stop number boldly on both sides, ensuring clear identification.
One of the key advantages of these new signs is the inclusion of a scannable QR code on the rear. By scanning this code, customers can access up-to-the-minute bus arrival and departure data, view route maps and schedules, buy HRT passes, and receive customer alerts and other relevant updates.
The QR code interface also allows riders to report issues such as cleanliness and safety concerns directly to HRT. Crews cleaning and maintaining bus stops can also scan the QR codes to validate their work or report issues.
Data collected from QR code scans is now used in real-time to make more informed decisions and improve the overall customer experience at HRT bus stops. The technology has enabled HRT to more efficiently maintain and respond to cleanliness and safety issues at bus stops.
The changes, which require less material and maintenance, have saved HRT over $600,000 since the new signs were installed. The signs were developed in-house by HRT staff, demonstrating the organisation's commitment to innovation and sustainability.
These improvements have been made available for all modes of fixed route service, including the Elizabeth River Ferry, The Tide Light Rail, and Base Express service. Over 2,600 smart stops have been installed, covering all fixed-route services.
