British technology company Nvidia invests a vast sum of £11 billion in AI technology within the U.K., announcing this during a visit by U.S. President Trump.
In a significant move to bolster the UK's artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, Nvidia, in partnership with tech giants like Microsoft, CoreWeave, Nscale, and others, is set to build out the country's sovereign compute capacity. This ambitious project forms part of the UK's broader strategy to position Britain as Europe's undisputed AI leader.
David Hogan, Nvidia's Vice President for Enterprise EMEA, has highlighted the UK's opportunity for rapid AI growth and innovation, stating that the only thing missing was infrastructure. To address this, the AI factories being developed are intended to power the new industrial revolution and provide the infrastructure for the world's most widely adopted models to run locally.
Hogan has framed this buildout as part of a broader redefinition of AI as essential national infrastructure. One of the key components of this strategy is the newly announced 'AI growth zone'. Microsoft, in collaboration with Nscale, will work towards building the UK's most powerful supercomputer in Loughton, running on 24,000 GPUs to power Azure services.
Nscale, the partner company deploying 60,000 of the newest Nvidia Blackwell Ultra chips in the UK, is also involved in a significant partnership with OpenAI. This partnership will result in 'Stargate UK', a data center cluster expected to support models including GPT-5. With this deployment, 'Stargate UK' is expected to be one of the largest GPU deployments in Europe.
The £11bn investment from Nvidia into Britain's AI ecosystem includes not only chip orders but the land, power, and operations required for new data centers. This investment is aimed at strengthening Britain's position in the global AI arms race, as competition in the field heats up with tech giants like Google, Meta, and Elon Musk's xAI also scaling aggressively.
Interestingly, the UAE is reportedly seeking licenses to import 500,000 Nvidia GPUs per year, indicating aggressive scaling in the Middle East. Meanwhile, OpenAI's Oracle-backed Stargate project in the US is targeting two million GPUs. By 2026, the new data centers in the UK will result in Europe's largest GPU cluster.
In addition to this, Google announced a £5bn expansion of its UK cloud infrastructure during the same week, further underscoring the UK's commitment to AI development. As the race for AI leadership continues, Britain's strategic partnership with Nvidia is set to play a crucial role in its journey towards becoming Europe's undisputed AI leader.
