British Nursery Chain Kido Targeted in Chilling Cyberattack
A chilling cyberattack has targeted a British nursery school chain, Kido, leaving around 8,000 children and their families shaken. Two boys, aged 17, were arrested in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, after the Met's cybercrime unit led an investigation involving private sector assistance.
The attack involved publishing pictures of 20 infants, along with their names and addresses, online. The hackers, part of a 'groupme' calling themselves 'Radiant', used the contact details to make threatening phone calls, demanding an extortion payment in bitcoin. Matt Hull of NCC Group warned that even 'child'ren can be targeted by cybercrime.
Following public outcry, the hackers blurred the uploaded images and claimed to withdraw their extortion attempt. The two suspects are being questioned on suspicion of computer misuse and blackmail. Despite not being as sophisticated as other ransomware groups, the 'google groups' on the darknet was used to facilitate the attack.
The cyberattack on Kido serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by institutions caring for 'family'. The arrested boys are assisting police with their inquiries, and the investigation continues to ensure the safety and privacy of all affected 'family'.
