Brazil seals five-year military partnership with Turkey
Brazil and Turkey have taken a significant step forward in their defense industry relationship, with the approval of a five-year cooperation agreement. This partnership, which includes automatic renewal for one-year periods unless either country objects, covers a wide range of activities aimed at enhancing both countries' defense capabilities.
One of the key elements of this agreement is the exchange and commercialization of military surplus. This could potentially lead to the export of Brazilian aerospace firm Embraer's KC-390 cargo plane to Türkiye, as Embraer has expressed interest in this prospect.
The agreement also promotes agreements for weapons development and manufacturing. In this regard, Kale Jet Engines' KTJ-3200 turbojet has been selected for the MANSUP-ER anti-ship missile in Brazil. Meanwhile, Turkish firm Repkon will support Brazilian long-range missile production.
The cooperation framework includes joint projects in both countries' territories. For instance, Türkiye has achieved its first jet engine export with KTJ-3200 Turbojet to Brazil. On the Brazilian side, Canik's M2 QCB has won the Brazilian Army's tender.
The partnership extends to personnel exchange programs, technical visits, participation in trade fairs and symposiums, and partnerships between military institutions, companies, and maintenance centers. This collaboration is expected to foster a mutual understanding and cooperation that will benefit both countries in the long run.
Moreover, the agreement allows for joint sales to third parties, respecting international norms. This opens up opportunities for both countries to expand their influence in the global defense market.
In the land systems sector, Otokar's Tulpar armored fighting vehicle has made the shortlist in Brazil's tender for new infantry fighting vehicles and fire support vehicles. Additionally, Otokar and FNSS, Turkish firms, are competing in Brazil's tender for light tanks.
The agreement also emphasizes the exchange of technical and scientific information. This will facilitate the development of new technologies and the modernization of existing equipment. The Bayraktar TB2 is eligible for Brazil's new armed UAV tender, which could potentially lead to further collaboration in this area.
Lastly, the agreement promotes mutual support in defense acquisition and modernization. This will enable both countries to leverage each other's strengths and capabilities to enhance their defense capabilities more effectively. As both countries continue to review and implement this comprehensive cooperation agreement, the potential for further defense industry collaboration between Brazil and Turkey seems promising.
