BMW's Powerful i8 'Tiger' Project Shelved After Ambitious Boost
BMW's unique i8, codenamed 'Tiger', was set to receive a significant power boost. The project, led by BMW M GmbH, aimed to increase output to 455 hp and 700 Nm. However, it was ultimately shelved due to strategic decisions and cost considerations.
The enhanced i8 was to feature a more powerful 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. To accommodate this, additional intercoolers and a new eight-speed Aisin gearbox were required. These changes necessitated further modifications, such as a new rear subframe and larger tires. The project gained significant weight, adding at least 100 kilograms.
The ALPINA i8 prototype was spotted at the company's 60th anniversary event, showcasing a wider body, a large carbon-fiber rear wing, and a quad-exhaust setup. However, extensive software recalibration and regulatory compliance issues, along with uncertainty about its payoff, led to the project's cancellation.
Despite the ambitious plans to boost the BMW i8's power and performance, the project was shelved due to strategic decisions, cost considerations, and technical challenges. The modified i8 prototype, however, briefly made an appearance at ALPINA's 60th anniversary celebration.
