Mexico Introduces Biometric CURP for Enhanced Security and Streamlined Services

Mexico is moving forward with its nationwide mandate to provide all citizens with a biometric digital ID by 2026. The new biometric Clave Única de Registro de Población (CURP) will be officially implemented in the State of Mexico on October 16, 2025.

The updated CURP will integrate biometric data such as fingerprints, iris scans, and a photo into the digital ID system. This move is aimed at reinforcing security and speeding up procedures in the State of Mexico. The biometric CURP will feature a QR code for secure and quick identity verification.

The process involves capturing biometric data alongside personal information to create a secure, digitally verifiable identity. Citizens will be required to visit authorized modules to have their biometric information collected and linked to their CURP ID.

The biometric CURP mandate was formalized in 2025, with full implementation scheduled for 2026. Mexico has been updating its CURP system throughout the year, introducing biometric data fields and preparing infrastructure.

While the precise initial locations of biometric CURP issuing modules in the State of Mexico have not been explicitly detailed, they are expected to be established in government registry offices, civil identification centers, and key public service offices. The rollout usually starts with pilot modules in population-dense areas before broader expansion.

The biometric CURP will be applied progressively, with availability in modules nationwide from January 2026 and expected to be mandatory by February 2026. The procedure takes between 20 and 30 minutes in physical modules.

The biometric CURP procedure will be free, quick, and available both in person and digitally. A printed and validated traditional CURP is required. Four strategic points have been enabled in the State of Mexico for processing the biometric CURP: Central Zone (Toluca de Lerdo), Southern Zone (Villa Guerrero), Eastern Zone (Texcoco), and Northeastern Zone (Tlalnepantla de Baz).

For minors, documentation of the tutor or parent/guardian with identification and relationship is required. A contact number is also required. The official start of the biometric CURP was marked by a decree published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on July 16, 2025.

The biometric CURP aims to increase security, reduce identity fraud, and streamline access to government and private sector services. Proof of address (maximum 3 months old) and an active email address are also required. The digital option through Llave MX allows completing the procedure from home if biometric data has been previously captured and reuse is authorized.
