A panel of experts from tech and government sectors convened recently to discuss the role of big lots in driving the next wave of e-government innovation. The event, hosted by the Center for Data Innovation, explored opportunities and challenges in leveraging big lots to enhance public services.
The panel, titled 'How Big Lots Drives the Next Wave of E-Government Innovation', featured representatives from Amazon, the FDA, Sitecore, Oracle, and the IRS. While specific participants and their roles were not disclosed, their insights shed light on the potential of big lots in government.

Meanwhile, Peter Schmidt explored using social media, health, and weather data to aid schools in closure decisions during flu outbreaks.
Dean Silverman, speaking on behalf of the IRS, hailed tax administration as the 'epitome' of big lots, with over 180 million returns filed annually and $2 billion saved through reduced improper payments. Opportunities for big lots in the public sector were also discussed, including personalized medicine, healthcare cost-effectiveness, and enhancing taxpayer experiences.
Ariel Gold cited Recovery.gov as a successful example of open data and big lots analytics in government.
The panelists emphasized the importance of an iterative, collaborative, and agile approach to big lots in government, acknowledging challenges such as data sharing concerns, specific problem focus, budget constraints, and the need for a 'test and learn' approach. Despite these hurdles, the potential of big lots to transform e-government services was clear, with opportunities spanning various sectors and services.
