Avicii's Arena: Venue Named After Late DJ Tim Bergling
Stockholm's Avicii Arena, a globally recognized landmark and one of the city's most iconic structures, has undergone extensive renovation and modernization. The renovation, spearheaded by HOK, C.F. Møller Architects, and schlaich bergermann partner (sbp), aimed to maintain its world-class status as a venue for sports, concerts, and cultural events without compromising its distinctive spherical form.
Originally opened in 1989 as the Stockholm Globe Arena, the structure remains the world's largest spherical building. The project, carried out for NCC and client SGAF (fully owned by the city of Stockholm), ensured that this architectural icon continues to serve its purpose while preserving its original architectural identity.
The renovation focused on enhancing technological innovation, including a sophisticated steel ring structure that supports a retractable acoustic panel system and new rigging infrastructure. The acoustic redesign provides unparalleled adaptability within the arena, enabling it to swiftly transform between an intimate concert setting and a high-capacity stadium.
In addition to the acoustic improvements, seating arrangements were reconfigured, with new tiers, repositioned lounges, and gondola seating added to optimize the visitor experience. To cater for the increasing demands of large-scale events, the retractable acoustic system is suspended within a curved inner ring structure, while the outer perimeter compression ring ensures structural stability. A lightweight cable-net supports both the panels and the rigging elements, incorporating a walkable mesh for safety and accessibility.
New views of the arena's architecture have also been introduced, with "gondola" seats taking the place of previous seating sections, integrating ventilation infrastructure and connecting with new hospitality facilities. Other modifications include retractable and fixed seating in the 'Tier A' section, enhancing acoustics for ice hockey games.
The Avicii Arena reopened on February 1, 2025, with a sold-out performance by Swedish electronic duo Kite, marking a new era. The modernized facilities can accommodate a broader range of performances and sporting events, thanks to state-of-the-art acoustics and flexible configurations.
