Uber Technologies and Waymo, the autonomous driving subsidiary of Alphabet, have announced an expansion of their existing partnership. The collaboration aims to provide more people with rides in self-driving vehicles, starting with the deployment of Waymo's driverless vehicles on Uber's ride-hailing platform.

The partnership, initially announced in May 2023, includes plans to add Waymo's sixth-generation Waymo Driver to Uber's platform. This advanced autonomous driving technology stack uses a combination of high-resolution maps, cameras, lidar, and radar to monitor the environment and navigate safely.

Waymo's expanded partnership with Uber will see the deployment of electric Jaguar I-Pace SUVs equipped with the sixth-generation Waymo Driver. The number of Waymo vehicles on the Uber platform will grow into the hundreds over time.

The deployment will begin in 2025, with self-driving vehicles set to appear on the Uber platform in two new cities: Austin, Texas and Atlanta. Phoenix robotaxi operations of Waymo One, Waymo's autonomous ride-hailing service, have the largest fully autonomous service area in the world, covering 180 square miles.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has expressed excitement about bringing Waymo's technology to the Uber platform, while Tekedra Mawakana, co-CEO of Waymo, expressed her enthusiasm about the collaboration.

In addition to this partnership, Uber has also announced plans to add vehicles from GM's Cruise unit to its platform next year. Furthermore, Uber has made a second collaboration and strategic investment in London-based Wayve to deploy autonomous vehicles in global markets.

This expanded partnership between Uber Technologies and Waymo marks a significant step towards the widespread adoption of self-driving vehicles. The partnership plans to test fully driverless robotaxi services in cities like London, supported by government programs, with Waymo providing autonomous driving technology and Uber offering the ride-hailing platform.
