Automotive industry pioneer Vishay Intertechnology introduces first-ever ceramic capacitors with Y1 rating in SMD casing for enhanced automotive applications.

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has unveiled a new series of Automotive Grade AC line rated ceramic disc safety capacitors, designed to revolutionise the electric vehicle (EV), hybrid electric (HEV), and plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) industries. The new SMDY1 Automotive Series capacitors are the industry's first with a Y1 rating to be offered in a surface-mount casing.

These compact components, consisting of a copper-plated ceramic disc, will be used in various critical systems such as on-board chargers (OBC), traction inverters, battery management systems (BMS), e-compressors, and AC/DC converters. The high capacitance of these devices, up to 4.7 nF, makes them ideal for these applications.

The SMDY1 Automotive Series capacitors are designed to reduce production costs through surface-mount assembly and reflow soldering. They are available in two case sizes: the C case with a creepage distance of 10 mm and the D case with a creepage distance of 14.5 mm.

One of the key advantages of the SMDY1 Automotive Series capacitors is their low, flat profile on the PCB. Unlike leaded components, they offer a minimal profile, enabling flat casings or backside PCB mounting without the clearance space required by through-hole capacitors.

These capacitors are also RoHS-compliant and halogen-free, ensuring environmental friendliness. They are designed for EMI / RFI suppression and filtering in harsh, high humidity environments. The encapsulation of the SMDY1 Automotive Series devices is made of flame-resistant epoxy resin in accordance with UL 94 V-0.

The SMDY1 Automotive Series components are AEC-Q200 qualified and PPAP is available. They can withstand the 85 / 85 / 1000 h test, demonstrating their robustness and reliability. The devices offer high humidity resistance with a Class IIB humidity grade (in accordance with IEC60384-14 annex I).

The manufacturers of the SMDY1 automotive series components, Nexperia and Vishay, have announced that these components are robust in high-humidity environments and are ideal for use in electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and hybrid vehicles.

These new capacitors are a significant step forward in the development of more efficient and reliable electric and hybrid vehicles. With their unique combination of high capacitance, surface-mount design, and robustness, the SMDY1 Automotive Series capacitors are set to play a crucial role in the future of the automotive industry.
