Apple's New AirPods Pro 3 Score Zero in Repairability

Apple's latest AirPods Pro 3 have hit the shelves, priced at €249. However, a teardown by iFixit reveals a disappointing repairability score of 0 out of 10, raising concerns about their lifespan and environmental impact.

iFixit's analysis found that opening the AirPods Pro 3's housing requires heat treatment and a sharp knife, causing irreparable damage to the plastic. Neither the AirPods nor the charging case is designed for easy repair. The case is fully glued, making it difficult to open without causing scratches. Battery replacement is considered very difficult and rarely offered by retailers. Apple typically replaces the hardware if the battery goes, as the battery is sealed and cannot be removed without force. Each AirPod has a 0.221 Wh battery.

In terms of battery life, the AirPods Pro 3 last 8 hours on their own and 24 hours with the case, a reduction from the AirPods Pro 2's 30 hours. The charging case now has a single 1.334 Wh cell, down from the two cells used in the AirPods Pro 2. The ear cushions (Foam Tips) have been improved with a thin foam layer to enhance isolation.

Despite their improved features, the AirPods Pro 3's repairability issues are a significant concern. With a zero repairability score, consumers may face high replacement costs and contribute to electronic waste. Apple's focus on design and style seems to have come at the expense of durability and sustainability.
