ANZ Cybersecurity Facing Retention Crisis: Survey
A recent survey paints a grim picture of the cybersecurity industry in Australia and New Zealand. With 57% of local professionals considering leaving their jobs or the industry, and 87% citing 'burnout from workload' as a reason, the sector is facing a significant retention crisis.
The Net Promoter Score (NPS) for cybersecurity in the region is -9.4, indicating widespread dissatisfaction. The heavy workload is not the only challenge. Approximately two-thirds (64%) of ANZ organisations fail to check all alerts, and almost one-third of ANZ cybersecurity professionals rate the tools they use as poor. This inefficiency is compounded by the fact that ANZ cybersecurity staff must learn and manage, on average, 12.9 different tools.
Richard Davies, head of the Australia and New Zealand region at Lacework, a cybersecurity company, recommends reducing workload and stress by leveraging automation to reduce manual tasks and streamline security operations. This is particularly important given that 57% of respondents are personally managing a remote workforce, with 58% reporting increased stress and 70% having an increased workload. The high stress and workload are leading to a brain drain, with 64% of those with less than one year of experience considering leaving. Moreover, 27% of respondents report that current resourcing is failing to meet this year's needs.
The cybersecurity industry in Australia and New Zealand is facing a perfect storm of high workload, poor tools, and insufficient resources. With more than half of professionals considering leaving, urgent action is needed to address these issues and prevent a skills shortage.
