Announces the introduction of an affordable electric SUV in Australia, as claimed by BYD.
BYD Atto 2 Electric SUV Set to Launch in Australia Later This Year
The Chinese automaker BYD is set to launch its Atto 2 electric SUV in Australia later in 2025, likely towards the end of the year. This follows the brand's rapid growth in the Australian market and the successful launch of the Atto 3 in 2022.
The Atto 2 shares a striking resemblance with BYD's Dynasty series, particularly the Atto 3, boasting similar styling features. The SUV offers a panoramic sunroof, providing ample interior space for taller passengers.
Safety is a top priority for BYD, and the Atto 2 comes equipped with their full suite of safety features, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), six airbags, and a reversing or 360-degree camera system (depending on the variant). The SUV also features a light bar that extends across the rear of the vehicle and a rear window wiper, similar to the Atto 3.
The Atto 2 will utilize BYD's 8-in-1 powertrain and e-Platform 3.0, which includes Cell-to-Body (CTB) construction. This technology is designed to increase the vehicle's efficiency and range. The SUV will be powered by a 130 kW front-mounted motor that produces up to 290 Nm of torque.
The infotainment screen in the Atto 2 comes in two sizes: 10.1-inch for the Dynamic variant and 12.8-inch for the Premium model. The screen supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and offers Over-The-Air (OTA) updates. An 8.8-inch screen is located behind the steering wheel in the Atto 2's interior.
The Atto 2 can charge at up to 65 kW on a DC charger, charging the battery from 10-80% in around 37 minutes. The SUV also offers vehicle-to-load (V2L) with up to 3.3 kW of AC power available. A rear-diffuser-like section on the Atto 2's rear bumper could aid in vehicle efficiency.
The Atto 2 will be available in two variants: Dynamic and Premium. Detailed specs and pricing for the new Atto 2 will be announced closer to the SUV's launch. Based on related BYD models like the Atto 3 and Dolphin, the Atto 2 is expected to be competitively priced in the small electric SUV segment.
Riz Akhtar, the founder of carloop, a company focused on reducing transport emissions in Australia, is a mechanical engineer with a passion for electric vehicles. Akhtar's vision aligns with BYD's mission to provide affordable, efficient, and environmentally friendly vehicles.
The Atto 2's specifications for the Australian market include a single variant with a 51.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) BYD Blade battery, expected to deliver over 300 km of WLTP range. The SUV will have approximately 350 km WLTP range, a 0-100 km/h time of 7.9 seconds, and a top speed of 160 km/h. The Atto 2 will measure about 4,290 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, and 1,570 mm tall, with a 2,620 mm wheelbase. The suspension will consist of MacPherson struts front and torsion beam rear, and the brakes will be ventilated front discs and solid rear discs.
Stay tuned for more updates on the BYD Atto 2 as it approaches its launch in Australia.
The Atto 2, BYD's upcoming electric SUV in Australia, will reportedly be priced competitively in the small electric vehicle segment, following the successful launch of the Atto 3 and the brand's growth in the Australian market. This electric vehicle is designed with a focus on lifestyle, utilizing technology such as BYD's 8-in-1 powertrain, e-Platform 3.0, and advanced safety features like ADAS and a rear camera system. The Atto 2 will also incorporate technology from cars like the Dolphin, showcasing BYD's commitment to providing efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles, aligning with the vision of mechanical engineer and carloop founder Riz Akhtar, who shares a passion for electric vehicles.
