AMD's AI upscaling technology now accessible on various GPUs due to the release of the FSR 4 source code, without needing Linux.
In a surprising turn of events, a community of enthusiasts and modders have managed to implement AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 4 in games that support FSR 3. This unofficial implementation, while not fully supported, offers a promising alternative for Radeon and Arc gamers who don't have access to the latest DLSS models.
The multi-game mod called OptiScaler, developed by an anonymous user named /u/AthleteDependent926, allows users to specifically select FSR 4.0.2 in its user interface. This mod compiles the FSR 4 code, which was accidentally open-sourced by AMD, into a usable binary for games supporting FSR 3.
The source of FSR 4 was published under a highly permissive MIT license, allowing the community to work on its implementation. Tools like the DLSS Swapper, which allows replacing FSR 3.1 with FSR 4 in games that already support FSR 3.1, are related to this process, as reported by PC Games Hardware.
While FSR 4's image quality is inferior to Nvidia's DLSS 4, it is superior to Intel's XeSS for non-Intel GPUs using the DP4a path. In fact, in the test conducted on a Radeon RX 7800 XT connected to a 4K display, FSR 4 showed fewer artifacts and less aliasing compared to FSR 3. The test was also conducted on a Ryzen AI Max+ 395's integrated Radeon 8060S connected to a 1440p display.
Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 7800 XT took approximately 4.1ms to upscale to 4K, while the Ryzen AI Max+ 395's integrated Radeon 8060S took about 2.3ms to upscale to 1440p.
To enable FSR 4 with OptiScaler, users need to replace the "amd_fidelityfx_upscaler_dx12.dll" with the one from /u/AthleteDependent926's Reddit post. Users can then drop the compiled DLL file provided by the user into games with FSR 3 support to enable FSR 4.
This development offers an exciting opportunity for Radeon and Arc gamers who are looking to improve their gaming experience without the need for the latest DLSS models. Kudos to the enthusiasts and modders who made this trick possible.
