Amazon's Prime service now features more advertisements, prompting user dissatisfaction

Amazon Prime Video has increased the number of advertisements served on its platform, leading to dissatisfaction among its users. The move is part of Amazon's broader strategy to monetize its large Prime Video audience and leverage its retail-media advantage.

According to reports, up to six individual ads per hour are being served on Amazon Prime Video, a significant increase compared to earlier. This increase in ad count has been perceived as excessive by some users, who find the frequency of ads to be more frequent and resembling a more US-style series of breaks.

One user, who recently subscribed to Paramount and is currently hooked on the latest Dexter season, found the ads during the playback of the movie "Cliffhanger" on Amazon Prime Video to be unbearable. The user decided to exit the movie and skip the mid-movie ads.

Amazon's motivation to increase ad loads is largely to boost revenue and profit margins from its streaming service. The ad-supported user base of over 100 million in the U.S. provides brands with an opportunity to reach a large audience with innovative, purchase-linked ad formats.

However, this strategy has resulted in increased viewer complaints about ad volume. In comparison to other streaming services, Amazon attempts to keep ad loads competitive with linear TV but has arguably raised them to levels that some users find excessive.

Other major streaming platforms such as Roku, Disney+, and Hulu also have ad-supported subscriptions but may differ in ad quantity, format, and integration with e-commerce. Apple TV+, on the other hand, offers a cost-effective solution and a variety of great sci-fi series, making it the user's favorite streamer of the year.

Notably, the excellent Fallout adaptation is available on Amazon Prime Video, as well as the spin-off of The Boys, titled Gen V. However, Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos content is no longer available on Amazon Prime Video's ad tier.

In conclusion, Amazon's decision to increase ad loads on Prime Video has resulted in a mixed response from its users. While the move has boosted Amazon's ad revenue, it has also led to increased viewer complaints about ad volume. As a result, users may consider alternative streaming platforms like Apple TV+ that offer a more ad-free experience.
