Amazon employees delivering groceries? Indeed, it seems some personnel within the company are involved in the distribution of grocery items.
Amazon Corporate Employees Volunteer for Grocery Delivery During Prime Day
Amazon has announced that its corporate employees are being asked to volunteer at warehouses for grocery delivery during Prime Day, the company's busiest sales event. The volunteers will assist with tasks such as picking items, preparing carts, packing boxes, and preparing bags of groceries, working two-hour shifts while still expected to maintain their regular job duties.
This effort aims to allow store teams to focus on the most impactful work and helps corporate employees get closer to customers. The support is voluntary and also intended to boost morale during a period of high demand.
This practice reflects broader challenges Amazon faces in scaling its grocery business and meeting delivery demands during peak times like Prime Day, when order volumes surge significantly. The company has historically leveraged corporate volunteers during critical periods to supplement frontline operations without reallocating full staff, helping ensure timely deliveries and customer satisfaction.
Amazon is expanding its same-day and next-day delivery services to millions of U.S. customers in more than 4,000 smaller cities, towns, and rural areas by the end of this year. This move is part of the company's ongoing efforts to improve its delivery capabilities and meet increasing customer expectations.
In addition to traditionally popular items like electronics, apparel, toys, and home décor, groceries and everyday essentials are included in the Prime Day sale. This year's Prime Day event (July 8-11) is the longest summer Prime Day sale to date.
Amazon President and CEO Andy Jassy recently acknowledged that with the potential of GenAI, Amazon might need fewer people for certain jobs and more for others. Jassy encouraged employees to educate themselves about the technology and use AI whenever possible. Employees who embrace change, become conversant in AI, help build and improve AI capabilities, and deliver for customers will be well positioned to have high impact at Amazon.
For its first quarter ended March 31, Amazon reported a 9% increase in net sales to $155.7 billion, compared with $143.3 billion in Q1 2024. Excluding the $1.4 billion unfavorable impact from year-over-year changes in foreign exchange rates throughout the quarter, net sales jumped 10%. The company's North America segment sales increased 8% YoY to $92.9 billion.
Seattle-based Amazon is ranked No. 2 on The PG 100, Progressive Grocer's 2025 list of the top food and consumables retailers in North America. The company was also named among Progressive Grocer's Retailers of the Century. A manager noted that this effort would help "connect" warehouse and corporate teams.
