Amazon is set to strengthen its presence in Germany with a series of new investments and logistics centers. The tech giant, which currently employs around 40,000 people in the country, has announced plans to open several new facilities and convert existing ones into modern redistribution centers.

The planned locations for these new logistics centers include Bietigheim (Baden-Württemberg), Könnern (Saxony-Anhalt), Rohr (Bavaria), and Zweibrücken (Rhineland-Palatinate, involving a building conversion). Amazon also plans to build a new sorting center in Allersberg (Bavaria), and establish distribution centers in Ettenheim and Bad Urach (Baden-Württemberg).

In addition to these, new locations in Horn-Bad Meinberg (NRW), Dummerstorf (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), and Erfurt (Thuringia) have also been announced. The existing logistics center in Werne has been converted to a highly modern redistribution center as of September 2025, and the site in Dortmund also includes a redistribution center.

Amazon's investments in Germany total around 90 billion euros since 2010, with the company stating it will continue to invest heavily. Amazon CEO Rocco Brauniger did not provide specifics for planned expenditures for 2025 and 2026, but emphasized the company's commitment to the German market.

In a significant move, Amazon is developing an AI assistant for businesses selling goods via the Amazon marketplace in the US. The tool, expected to be released in Germany in the next few months, will allow businesses to automate tasks such as reordering goods, initiating advertising measures, and issuing commands for storage or price changes. The entrepreneur can decide how much autonomy the AI assistant has.

Amazon also operates development sites where work is done to improve services, such as improving the voice assistant Alexa's understanding of various German dialects. At the Aachen site, developers are working to make Alexa understand Saxon, Bavarian, and North German dialects.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is also increasing its investment in Germany. AWS plans to invest 8.8 billion euros in its infrastructure in the Frankfurt region by 2026. The investments by AWS are part of Amazon's growing interest in Germany, where it has invested 9.6 billion euros between 2014 and 2023.

The company's expansion in Germany comes amidst concerns from the Federal Cartel Office, which considers Amazon to have an "overwhelming" cross-market significance for competition. However, Amazon's continued investment and growth in the country suggest a commitment to the market despite these challenges.

Amazon also employs delivery drivers who deliver packages for Amazon as subcontractors, in addition to its in-house logistics and development centre staff. The company's total workforce in Germany has grown to 40,000, an increase of 4,000 from a year ago.

In summary, Amazon's expansion in Germany includes the opening of new logistics centers, the conversion of existing ones into modern redistribution centers, and the development of an AI assistant for businesses. The company's total investments in Germany since 2010 amount to around 90 billion euros, with plans to invest approximately 14 billion euros in 2024.
