Modernization efforts are being made to integrate 93 traffic light units with the existing Automated Road Traffic System.

Almaty Lighthouses to Adopt Innovative Operational Methods

Modernizing Almaty's Roadways for Safer Driving

In a bid to enhance road safety, Almaty's Peacekeepers are vigilantly patrolling the city's road network, according to Polisia.kz's reports.

The emphasis currently lies on the upgrading of the Automated Road Traffic Management System (ARMS) with plans to hook up 93 traffic light intersections. The coming year will witness the second phase of this project, aiming to connect an additional 357 intersections.

As Kanat Taymerdenov, Almaty's head of Police Department, puts it at a meeting on revamping the city's road network and road safety, "The modernized system will enable real-time traffic regulation at intersections, taking traffic flow intensity, traffic flow statistics, adaptive countdown timers, and priority passage for specialized vehicles into account. Once phase two is complete, we'll be able to adjust traffic flows according to real-time monitoring, user-selected priorities for public transport and emergency vehicles, and the optimization of priority routes. Additionally, the system will monitor intersection traffic in real-time and adapt to changes."

As revealed in a report on traffic accidents, the Administrative Police in Almaty propose the installation of additional signal phases at specific intersections, namely, Abay Avenue - Tlendiyev Street, Abay Avenue - Turgut Ozal Street, Raimbek Avenue - Ecmukov Street, Ryskulov Avenue - Zhangełdin Street. It's worth noting that, thanks to the measures taken so far, the number of traffic accidents with injuries has decreased by 40.1% and the number of fatalities by 42.3% in the first eight months of this year.

Expanding our horizons, modern traffic management systems typically prioritize enhancing road safety through four main strategies: real-time monitoring via cameras and sensors, optimized traffic signals by adjusting signal phases based on current traffic conditions, data analytics, and public awareness. Almaty could potentially benefit from advanced technologies like smart traffic signal systems and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication to further improve safety.

Local authorities or specific reports would provide further details on which intersections are earmarked for additional signal phases and the reasons behind these choices.
