Airline giant Lufthansa plans to implement artificial intelligence to minimize waste on flights

Lufthansa Group is making strides in reducing its ecological footprint, with a focus on digital innovations. At the heart of these efforts are the Tray Tracker and the Pendle Project, two initiatives designed to enhance sustainability and improve the passenger experience.

The Tray Tracker, a mobile, AI-assisted technology, is currently in use in Frankfurt and Munich, with plans to roll it out across the entire corporation. This innovative tool analyses food leftovers on board flights, enabling Lufthansa Catering to better tailor portion sizes and menu offerings to actual demand. By doing so, the Tray Tracker helps to reduce food waste and flight weight, which can lead to less CO2 emissions.

Factors such as flight route, class of travel, and meal concept are included in the evaluation, ensuring a precise analysis of consumption patterns. This data-driven approach allows Lufthansa to offer a more personalised dining experience while minimising waste.

In parallel with the Tray Tracker, Lufthansa is also implementing the Pendle Project. This initiative uses machine learning to predict the optimal loading of flights with catering products. The goal is to avoid overproduction while ensuring adequate supply for passengers. The Pendle Project calculates the likely demand on board based on factors such as flight route, flight duration, and previous consumption behavior.

Passengers on short, medium-haul flights with Lufthansa, SWISS, and Austrian Airlines can now pre-select their meals to plan better and avoid overproduction. On intercontinental flights, the main course can be selected before departure in the premium class. These measures not only contribute to sustainability but also offer passengers a greater degree of choice and convenience.

Dominik Lelle, a member of the online editorial team of AERO INTERNATIONAL since 2023, has a close connection to the development of sustainability measures at Lufthansa. Lelle feels the same enthusiasm for aviation every time he boards a plane and aims to make the world of aviation tangible and exciting for readers. Outside the editorial office, Lelle is a passionate traveler, looking forward to discovering new horizons.

Lufthansa Group is also committed to replacing single-use plastic and aluminum products with more sustainable alternatives. Since 2022, a third of the corresponding on-board items have already been converted. The 'to go' offer on the last flight of the day, where fresh products are sold at reduced prices, helps to further reduce food waste.

In conclusion, Lufthansa Group's innovative use of technology and commitment to sustainability is shaping the future of aviation. The Tray Tracker and the Pendle Project are prime examples of how digital innovations can be harnessed to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and enhance the passenger experience. With Lelle's passion and expertise, we can expect to see even more exciting developments in the world of sustainable aviation.
