Aircraft warning raised by authorities in Lithuania

In recent days, Lithuania has found itself in a unique situation, as multiple unidentified drones originating from Belarus have entered its airspace. The news of these incursions has sparked alert and intensified military monitoring, with Lithuanian authorities investigating the incidents thoroughly.

On July 28, 2025, an unidentified drone was detected flying from Belarus into Lithuanian airspace. The drone was first spotted by Lithuania’s Air Force while still in Belarusian airspace, and later reported by local residents near Vilnius. The object, flying at about 200 meters altitude, sparked a phone alert warning local residents of the unidentified aircraft.

Lithuanian police, national crisis management, and military forces swiftly responded to the situation, conducting a search for the drone. Plans were made for demining specialists to secure the area once the drone was found.

Officials, including Lithuania's Defence Minister Dovilė Šakalienė, have highlighted the probable scenario that Ukrainian air defenses disrupted the drone’s navigation, causing it to stray into Lithuanian territory inadvertently. There is no current indication of intentional aggression toward Lithuania.

It's important to note that this is not the first time Lithuania has encountered a drone incursion. On July 10, 2025, a similar incident occurred, initially suspected as a Shahed-type military drone but later identified as a harmless homemade drone of plywood construction.

To bolster its air defenses, the Lithuanian military is improving its drone detection capabilities, including adopting Ukrainian acoustic detection technologies, set for deployment in 2026. This move indicates increased vigilance against potential future airspace violations.

These incidents coincide with the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict where Russia has launched numerous Shahed-type drones against Ukraine. Belarus, a key Russian ally and staging ground, likely facilitates the origin of these drones, increasing regional tensions.

The police in Lithuania have mobilized all their forces to investigate the incident. However, the minister could not specify the type of object involved. The source of the news is ntv.de and lar/dpa.

It's crucial to emphasize that while these incidents are concerning, current evidence favors accidental straying of drones due to Ukrainian countermeasures rather than targeted Lithuanian provocations or attacks. Lithuania is treating these incidents seriously, conducting thorough investigations to assess if any posed a direct threat.

As the situation continues to develop, Lithuania, alongside its Baltic neighbours, remains vigilant in protecting its airspace and maintaining peace in the region.
