However, the parliamentary majority voted against a motion regarding the acquisition of firefighting aircraft, indicating a continued preference for helicopters.
Rainer Genilke, a CDU interior politician, has called for more investment in the fire service, while SPD faction leader Björn Lüttmann mentioned the presence of three automated fire trucks in Brandenburg. The minister also highlighted that Brandenburg is technologically well-equipped for fire protection, with 34 tanker fire trucks designed specifically for the region, and another 21 being acquired.
Despite the debate, it's important to note that Brandenburg, with its dry soils and high contamination with unexploded ordnance, is considered to have the highest risk of forest fires in the region. The state has moved to the forefront of the European Union in terms of fire protection due to the crises it has faced, according to Minister Wilke.
As the debate continues, it's clear that both helicopters and firefighting aircraft have their merits, and the decision regarding their acquisition for forest fire suppression in Brandenburg remains to be seen.
