AI model GPT-4 returns to ChatGPT platform after OpenAI succumbs to intense criticism

In a move to appease existing subscribers, OpenAI has reinstated the legacy model GPT-4o as a selectable option for ChatGPT Plus users. The decision comes after a wave of user dissatisfaction following the launch of GPT-5, the latest model powering ChatGPT.

The initial rollout of GPT-5, on August 6, removed user access to GPT-4o and made it the default model without manual selection. This move, aimed at streamlining the user experience, was met with widespread criticism from users who valued GPT-4o's conversational style, balance of speed, and reasoning.

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, acknowledged the importance of certain aspects of GPT-4o to users, despite GPT-5's technical improvements. He confirmed that GPT-4o would return as a selectable option for ChatGPT Plus users, following a massive backlash.

However, free users do not have manual control over model selection. The availability of GPT-4o and the ability to switch between it and GPT-5 are currently limited to Plus subscribers. The long-term availability of GPT-4o will depend on usage and user preferences as OpenAI continues to evolve its AI offerings.

The launch of GPT-5 has not been without its challenges. The model has been criticized for its writing capabilities compared to its predecessor, GPT-4o. However, it has been designed to hallucinate on fewer occasions and be less sycophantic. It also features a more professional tone, with 'safe completions' that balance not answering dangerous requests with helping those with genuine problems.

Altman took part in a Reddit Ask Me Anything session where users expressed their sadness that the new model lacked personality, having built deep relationships with the 'personality' behind the responses to GPT-4o. The CEO is considering further changes, such as the potential release of a GPT-4.5 model.

OpenAI has also deleted access to older models (GPT-3 and GPT-4) to allow all users to use the latest version, GPT-5. Many users have praised GPT-5 for its enhanced practical nature, including improved coding abilities and the ability to work in parallel tasks.

In addition to the return of GPT-4o, OpenAI is allowing 3000 thinking queries (those that require deeper reasoning) per week for Pro users. The brand aims to create a more wide-ranging tool with GPT-5, rather than just a companion.

Despite the rollout issues, GPT-5 has been stabilized for Plus users, who pay $200 per month, not for those on lower tiers. OpenAI continues to balance innovation with user choice, ensuring that its models cater to a diverse range of user needs and preferences.
