AI humor intertwines with politics: Exploration of Trump administration's 'meme-based combat strategies'

In the realm of politics, the use of technology to shape public opinion and communication strategies has become increasingly prevalent. One such technology is Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has found its way into the White House, albeit with controversy.

Elon Musk, during his brief stint as the de facto head of the Department of Government Efficiency, may have played a role in introducing AI-powered comedic pop culture into the White House. This assertion, however, is not universally accepted, and there is no concrete evidence to support it.

During his 2024 campaign, former President Donald Trump announced plans for "the largest mass deportation in US history." Coinciding with this, AI-generated images began to appear, not only on obscure social media accounts but also on the President's and his allies' official accounts, including the White House's X account.

One such instance involved the sharing of an AI-generated image of an alleged undocumented immigrant, Virginia Basora-Gonzalez, in handcuffs. This move, while prompting outrage, was met with approval from many Trump supporters. White House press aid Kaelan Dorr wrote on X that the arrests and memes would continue.

However, the use of AI-generated memes by the Trump administration for communication purposes is a contentious issue. While some argue that it serves as a tool for humour and political satire, others see it as a means to discipline and alienate those perceived as 'Others.' Researchers have found that AI-generated visuals depicting members of marginalized groups aim to demonize and dehumanize them.

The use of AI to construct a superhuman persona for Trump, portraying him as an idealized leader with extraordinary powers, has also been noted. Far-right parties in Europe, like Germany's Alternative für Deutschland, have similarly used AI to push narratives of foreign invasion.

The online environment created by the Trump administration has been characterised as extremist, nativist, and misogynistic by Nathan Taylor Pemberton in a recent column for the New York Times. Under Trump 2.0, American government officials and institutions have adopted a communication style that heavily relies on AI-generated comedic visuals.

Despite the widespread use of AI-generated memes, there is a lack of documented evidence to support the claim that they were used as a strategic communication approach by the Trump administration or associated political figures. Furthermore, the impact of such usage on marginalized groups requires rigorous study, which appears unavailable at this time.

As we continue to navigate the digital age, the role of AI in political communication remains a topic of ongoing debate and research. Understanding its implications and potential impact on society is crucial in ensuring a fair and inclusive discourse in politics.

  1. The Trump administration's use of AI-generated memes in political communication extends to general news and pop-culture, as seen in the sharing of AI-created images on social media.
  2. In addition to political discourse, AI-generated visuals in the realm of entertainment have been used to create superhuman personas, such as the idealized leader portrayal of Donald Trump.
  3. As more political figures leverage technology like AI for communication and public opinion shaping, it's vital to scrutinize its impact on social-media platforms and society at large, focusing on marginalized groups and ensuring a fair and inclusive discourse in politics.
