A Rude Awakening for OpenAI: Sora's Rough Launch
AI Giant OpenAI Faces Backlash Over Botched Release of AI Model Sora
In a blunt post on LinkedIn, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, admitted what everyone was thinking: OpenAI blew it with Sora's launch. According to Altman, "We significantly underestimated demand for Sora."
Thousands of OpenAI enthusiasts tuned in for the live unveiling of Sora yesterday, only to find themselves met with a frustration-inducing message: Sora account creation was not possible due to high demand.
This is a bitter pill to swallow, given that millions of people are already shelling out $20 a month for a ChatGPT Plus subscription. It must have been even more galling for OpenAI Pro users who, not long ago, forked over $200 a month for a hyped-up Pro tier of ChatGPT.
So, what went wrong? Apparently, OpenAI let their hype cloud their judgment. Instead of easing into the launch with a select group and a gradual rollout (say, starting with Pro users), OpenAI was reckless enough to drop Sora on every ChatGPT Plus subscriber at once.
They probably thought they could handle the demand. Turns out, they couldn't. It's bizarre that OpenAI, poster child for successful product launches, would make such a blooper.
Just two years ago, OpenAI stunned everyone with the surprise, record-setting launch of ChatGPT. They scrambled to accommodate over 100 million new users in less than three months. You'd think they'd have learned from past mistakes. Apparently not.
Now, OpenAI is playing catch-up and trying to keep their customer base from growing discontented with a service that's still just a pipe dream. It's almost amusing that a handful of lucky Sora users have been trolling Sam Altman with videos showing stressed-out OpenAI engineers and a hot seat for Altman himself.
OpenAI has mastered the AI hype cycle, bending it to Altman's will. But what makes Sora truly impressive? As an AI expert who's tried every AI video generator on the market, I find Sora a bit lackluster when compared to Luma and Runway.
Then again, Luma and Runway never went mega-viral. The media and tech bros, much like me, don't care about the CEOs behind these companies. The real secret to OpenAI's success? Altman's demonic charisma and his ability to whip up tech frenzies through mesmerizing product demos.
But alas, I too am left in the cold, unable to access Sora. So, if you happen to snag a spot, don't forget to troll Sam Altman and his hapless engineers!
