South African Startup Bolthale AI Bridges Language Gap in Digital Africa

Bolthale AI, a South African startup, is making waves in the tech industry by developing AI-powered natural language processing (NLP) tools. These tools are designed to support indigenous African languages, breaking down language barriers and enabling people who speak those languages to access digital services and information in their native tongues.

The inspiration for Bolthale AI came from Thapelo Nthite, the startup's founder. Nthite had a personal experience where his grandmother, who spoke Setswana, was unable to load prepaid airtime onto her phone due to the language barrier. This experience highlighted the need for more inclusive digital platforms that cater to the diverse linguistic landscape of Africa, where only about 8% of South Africans speak English at home.

Bolthale AI leverages Google AI technologies to facilitate linguistic inclusion, making communication and access to services more equitable for speakers of multiple local languages across Africa. Their work enables businesses and digital platforms to engage more effectively with diverse, multilingual communities and supports sectors like healthcare by improving access to information in native languages.

The founders of Bolthale AI, who have a technical background, having studied electrical engineering at the University of Cape Town, started their journey by exploring technology that enables people to interact with computer systems using natural language. The rise of GenAI has helped change the mindset towards AI, making it more acceptable for adoption.

Bolthale AI's business focuses on core AI models and customer engagement platforms. They offer these models to other organizations and innovators for integration into their solutions. The startup took part in the Google for Startups Accelerator: South Africa, which provided them with access to external AI tools for running their business.

One of the tools used by Bolthale AI is Gemini for various tasks. They also prioritize ongoing upskilling for their teams, with initiatives such as "Speaky Wednesday" to keep AI integrated into their work processes.

However, when Bolthale AI started, AI was not widely known, requiring education and trust-building. Today, the startup is working to create a more inclusive environment by enabling businesses to communicate with their customers in languages they understand and trust. Their mission is to ensure that people can fully participate in the economies and societies they belong to, addressing the issue of linguistic inclusion in Africa's digital transformation.

In South Africa, it is impossible to register a business or open a bank account online if one does not understand English, leaving many people behind. Bolthale AI's API and SaaS platform aim to change this, making digital services more accessible to a wider audience.
