Vitalik Buterin Criticizes Agentic AI Models, Expresses Preference for Open-Weight AI Models Over Them

AI advocate Vitalik Buterin critique agentic AI models, favoring open-weight alternatives instead.

In a recent development, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has expressed concerns about the rising trend of Agentic AI models in the artificial intelligence industry. This marks his first major comment on the subject since his views on Ethereum Treasury firms last week.

Buterin, known for his interest in AI, has shown a preference for human-in-the-loop AI models over fully autonomous or "agentic" AI. He emphasizes the importance of human control, oversight, and editing capabilities to improve safety, accuracy, and output quality. Buterin criticizes overly autonomous AI systems for being inefficient and prone to errors, especially in tasks that require quick, precise responses, such as programming.

He is particularly enthusiastic about open-weight AI models—those that allow users to edit and fine-tune AI-generated results in real time—arguing this approach offers better adaptability and control compared to fully agentic AI. Additionally, Buterin shows interest in brain-computer interface (BCI) technology that can monitor user reactions live and dynamically adapt AI outputs to user expectations.

Regarding the development of Agentic AI models, Buterin is critical. He sees the industry’s focus on such highly autonomous AI as risky because it limits human input and increases the chances of widespread mistakes. He considers agentic AI's marketing promises often overblown, citing an example of an AI agent overpaying for an NFT due to insufficient human oversight. Instead, he suggests combining human judgment with AI via collaboration, input incentives, or decentralized decision-making bodies (like DAOs) to achieve reliable outcomes.

Bitmine Technologies, one of the Ethereum Treasury firms racing for strong ETH accumulation, currently holds 1,150,263 ETH, making it the largest Ethereum treasury globally. The total worth of Bitmine Technologies' ETH holdings is over $4.96 billion, with each ETH token currently valued at $4,311. Ethereum's current price is $4,621, with a 24-hour volatility of 7.6%. The market cap of Ethereum is $558.67 billion, with a 24-hour volume of $57.66 billion.

Buterin has also cautioned ETH Treasury firms against over-leveraging. He agrees with the comments by former Tesla AI director Andrej Karpathy, stating that enabling more avenues for human input can improve output quality and enhance safety.
