Agentic AI Threats Surge: Check Point, Forrester Warn of Imminent Breaches
Cybersecurity experts caution about rising threats from agentic AI and generative AI. Check Point reports malicious use of agentic AI by threat actors, while Forrester predicts a data breach due to agentic AI deployment next year. Meanwhile, the EU plans to launch a known exploited vulnerability database.
Agentic AI, designed to perform tasks autonomously, is being exploited by cybercriminals to speed up reconnaissance and exploit crafting, according to Check Point. Forrester predicts that a publicly disclosed data breach due to agentic AI deployment is imminent within the next year, potentially leading to employee dismissals.
Generative AI, introduced three years ago, has already been responsible for several breaches. Gartner warns that AI agents will accelerate account hijacking by threat actors by 50% within two years. To counter these threats, Forrester's AEGIS framework focuses on six core elements: Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC), Identity and Access Management (IAM), data security, application security, threat management, and Zero Trust architecture. Organizations are advised to follow recommendations from bodies like the BSI and Bitkom in Germany to ensure minimum security measures.
In response to increasing cyber threats, the EU will launch its own known exploited vulnerability (KEV) database based on the EU Vulnerability Database (EUVD). Additionally, following the Salt Typhoon attacks, at least five governments may nationalize or place restrictions on critical social security infrastructure. Forrester predicts that quantum security spending will exceed 5% of overall cybersecurity budgets by 2026.
The rapid evolution of AI, particularly agentic and generative AI, presents significant security challenges. As threats escalate, so do the responses, with the EU launching a KEV database and governments considering stricter social security infrastructure controls. Organizations must prioritize robust security measures to protect against these emerging threats.
