Twenty years ago, British singer-songwriter Imogen Heap created a masterpiece that would redefine the boundaries of vocal music in popular genres. "Hide and Seek," a track from her second album, Speak for Yourself, has become her most renowned work.
The song gained global recognition after it was featured in the American television series The O.C., introducing it to an international audience. However, its journey began much earlier, during the recording sessions for Speak for Yourself.
Initially, "Hide and Seek" was an a capella performance, improvised and recorded in less than five minutes. But it was the innovative use of vocal processing that transformed the song into a unique electronic soundscape.

After its release, "Hide and Seek" became Heap's best-known song. It remained relevant and was introduced to a new generation after landing another feature in the BBC's Normal People. The track's bridge was later sampled by Jason Derulo in his chart-topping single, Whatcha Say, exposing Heap's music to millions more listeners.
In 2021, Heap remastered "Hide and Seek" for its 20th anniversary, giving fans a chance to revisit this iconic piece of music history.
Interestingly, Heap chose to go it alone when embarking on her next project, Speak for Yourself, recording "Speak for Yourself" independently. The album, released in 2005, showcases Heap's versatility as a musician and her ability to push boundaries in her music.
