36% of Companies Boost Inventory Management with 2D Barcodes
A significant number of companies, 36%, are focusing on improving inventory management and asset tracking. Meanwhile, 43% are seeking enhanced transparency in sourcing and traceability. However, many are still held back by legacy systems that can't parse 2D data, despite increased investment in automation and data capture tools.
The 'Advancing Logistics Operations Through Intelligent Data Capture' report, available at www.gs1us.org/logistics, highlights the benefits of modernizing supply chains. It explores how intelligent data capture, including the use of 2D barcodes like QR codes and GS1 DataMatrix, can store up to 7,000 characters compared to the 48 of 1D barcodes. This increased data capacity can greatly improve accuracy, traceability, and collaboration at scale.
However, weekly barcode readability issues, due to poor label quality, inconsistent labeling, or outdated scanning systems, affect 70% of logistics operations. GS1 Standards, along with 2D barcodes, can help reduce these issues, eliminate the need for relabeling or manual intervention, and enhance information exchange, a key reason for 47% of companies investing in 2D barcodes.
The report, commissioned by GS1 US, underscores the need for companies to adopt intelligent data capture methods to advance their logistics operations. By embracing 2D barcodes and GS1 Standards, businesses can improve transparency, reduce errors, and enhance information exchange, ultimately driving operational efficiency.
